PICKING UP CHILDREN
Parents are required to park and come in to sign their child out when they pick children up. Please do not leave babies or small children in the car alone when you come in. Please park your car in a parking place; do not leave your car under the portico.
Children will be released only to those persons listed on the application form. Any additions to that list should be put on the form by the parent. One-time permission for a person to pick up a child must be given to the staff in writing. (PHOTO IDENTIFICATION WILL BE REQUIRED).
Staff members may not transport children after child care hours unless the staff person’s name is on that form.
A parent who has legal custody of a child and who does not want the other parent to pick up the child must present a copy of the court order to be placed in the child’s file.
VISITORS
Only children enrolled in the program may attend. Because of insurance guidelines we cannot allow visitors.
REGULAR SCHOOL DAY HOURS Bus arrival until 6:00 p.m.
“No School for Students” Days 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
DAYS OF OPERATION
Our program operates on the Forsyth County Traditional School schedule. We will be closed on Labor Day, Thanksgiving (3 days), Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, Good Friday and Memorial Day. Our schedule during Christmas break depends upon registration. We plan to be open on other “No School for Students” days including Intercessions and Spring Break. We will inform you each month beginning in October of the full days we will be open. You must register and pay the $20 fee approximately ten days prior to the full days. A $10.00 fee will be charged for each day that a child does not attend when registered. (A five day notice will avoid this fee). A school calendar is on the back of this handbook.
SNOW DAYS
In Case of snow or icy conditions, please watch WXII - Channel 12, for closing information. We will be closed the first day of any snow closing. On the second consecutive day of any storm, if conditions have improved, the Child Care will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and will continue this schedule until school resumes. The charge for each snow day will be $15.00. If roads are icy, we will not be open. If in doubt, please call the Child Care at 8:00 a.m. (After school phone, 788-2230; Church office, 788-2297)
If schools close early during the school day because of bad weather, we will open early to meet your child when the bus arrives. We expect you to pick up your child within an hour of school closing. We want the children as well as the staff to get home safely!
COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE STAFF
Please give messages about your child to the staff in writing. You are welcome to telephone the staff and / or set up a conference at any time. Please do not engage the staff in any but brief conversations at the time you pick up your child. The staff’s main responsibility during program hours is to tend to the children.
CLOTHING
** Children should wear “sneaker” type shoes to play on the playground. They may leave a pair of sneakers in their cubby if they wear other types of shoes including sandals to school. Children will be required to sit at the picnic table during outdoor time if they do not have the proper shoes.
Children should wear clothes that withstand hard play and the use of washable paints. They should be dressed appropriately for the weather, wearing a coats when needed.
Sometimes accidents happen. We might spill juice on our shirts, or we might get sand in our socks. Accidents can be upsetting to our children. Therefore, we are asking parents to send an extra outfit including shirt, slacks or pants, socks, and underwear for such occasions. An extra pair of shoes is also recommended. Please place these items in a plastic or paper bag and label it with your child's name. Since this is important, please send these items at your earliest convenience.
HOMEWORK
Children are encouraged to do homework at child care if the parent prefers. Children are supervised and tutored as help is available. Parents should check over all homework. We do not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of their work. Calculators are not allowed at child care.
RULES FOR TOYS
Gameboys or other electronic devices are not allowed. We encourage each child to interact with adults and peers during the after-school care time.
DISCIPLINE POLICY
Sedge Garden After-school Care encourages a positive, happy atmosphere for all children. We wish to reinforce positive behavior by making the child feel good about himself or herself with verbal praise. We strive to teach the children respect for the staff and the other children.
A child will be given a verbal warning by the staff for misbehavior the first time. If the child continues to misbehave, the child will be put in “time-out” for an appropriate amount of time or will lose privileges such as outside time or playtime. Further disruptive behavior will result in notification of the parent and then removal from the program for one or more days.
CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT
North Carolina law mandates that care givers be required to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. If such cases arise, the alerted staff member will report to the director. The director will then notify the Protective Services Unit of the Department of Social Services.
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
In the event of a medical emergency, diligent attempts will be made to contact the mother, father, guardian and all emergency contacts listed on the child’s application form. If no one can be reached, the staff will act as your agent by taking necessary steps to procure medical attention. The parents or guardian will be help responsible for all associated costs of such medical care.
MEDICATIONS
PLEASE GIVE ANY MEDICATIONS YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO A STAFF MEMBER. Parents must complete the Permission to Administer Medication form before any oral medication, including prescription or over-the-counter medications, can be given. Medicines must be up-to-date and labeled with the child’s name. If your child has a severe reaction to a bite or sting we WILL administer topical Benedryl if your permission has been given on the registration form. All medication and times will be logged.
POLICY CONCERNING LICE
Regrettably the presence of lice is a common occurrence in childhood. If a child is found with evidence of lice, the parent will be called to pick up the child immediately. If your child has had lice, he or she should not be sent to child care until all lice and eggs are no longer present and the condition has been completely eradicated.
INSURANCE
The program carries an accident insurance policy for program-related accidents only. Please make claims to the director within ten days of the accident. The program is not liable for any accidents or illness occurring while the child is in the program’s care.
