Christian Home Month–May 2008--“Families Called to Hope”
The United Methodist Church and Sedge Garden United Methodist Church is proclaiming the month of May as “Christian Home Month” to celebrate the families in our church. As we know, the lifestyles of the 21st Century have brought quite a change to the “families” of today. It used to be considered “normal” for a family to consist of a mother, father and 2.5 children living happily in their home. Dad had a good paying job and Mom stayed home, kept house and took care of the children. We all know that this scenario does not happen today. The definition of family has changed to that of a single mom, a single dad, grandparents raising their grandchildren, adoptive families, same sex families, inter-racial families, individuals with no children, married couples with no children, “empty-nesters”, and the list could go on. The church must be willing to work to spiritually meet the needs of the family in today’s society and help strengthen the relationships of those persons in their own family situation.
How can we put Christ back in our homes? When was the last time you had a family time to read the Bible, pray together and even reflect on what is happening in each others lives? Are we all just too busy? Too busy for Christ in our homes!? Then we hear parents make the statement that they have lost all hope for their family. Is this the reason why? We used to see bumper stickers with the slogan, “The Family that Prays together, Stays together!” There might really be something to that. When was the last time you tried praying together? Read on.
The theme for the month is “Families Called To Hope.” We can put “Hope” back into our families by putting the Christian faith back into our households. We have let other things take priority in our lives, in our homes and in our families too long. Children have lost respect for their parents and themselves, much less others. Moms and Dads hardly have a chance to spend quality time with each other, because of working two jobs to meet the financial burden the family has grown. The children are doing just what they want to do and hanging out with their friends.
The staff would like to encourage each family in our church to make the month of May a special time for your family. There will be some suggested ideas for your family given out this coming Sunday in worship. Read over these ideas and see how your family could spend some time with each other and take time to put Christ and Christian values back in your home. With Christ we can put “Hope” back in our families.
One of the first suggestions is to set aside a time for your family to have one meal a week together. Make sure everyone is present and spend time in conversation around the table. Families do not take time to talk with each other very much anymore. A good way to begin this is to come to the dinner sponsored by the UMYF on Wednesday night, May 7 , at 6:00 p.m. This would be the ideal time to get your family together and have a delicious meal. The youth are sponsoring this meal as a fund raiser for the DiGerolamo family and their 4 year old son, Vinny. This meal is special in two ways. One is that your family can have dinner together and second is that our “church family” will be helping this very special family in our community and our church. So mark your calendar now for Wednesday, May 7 , at 6:00 p.m. and make reservations with the church office. Call and invite one of our Older Adults to be your “adopted” grandparent for the evening and bring them to dinner. Come see and feel the presence of Christ at your table and celebrate your family.
Blessings, Doug

GARDEN GABB
Romans 12:9-18: “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor (to shrink from in disgust) what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted (very loyal) to one another in brotherly love; give preference (advantage given to another) to one another in honor; not lagging (move slowly) in diligence, fervent (showing great warmth) in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation (great misery), devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute (to afflict constantly as to cause injury) you; bless and curse not. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind (focused on the same goal/vision) toward one another; do not be haughty (showing great pride in oneself) in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.”
If were only to put these verses into action daily…what changes would happen almost instantaneously in our lives? How often do we check our emails or cell phones for messages, and forget to check on those around us in pain? Isn’t it difficult to put this into practice? Especially when we don’t always like the people God wants us to love? Yet…I believe that is the power of Christ’s message…LOVE. It is a love that doesn’t judge people by the way the look, their profession, gifts, talents or what they can do for you…it is a love that says, “I love you simply because my Savior loved me enough to die for me.” God did not ask us to like people…He commanded us to Love Him above all others and Love our neighbors as ourselves.
God…may we become a church that loves, more than likes. May we build up, more than tear down. May we pray more than gossip. May we confess and repent, instead deny and reject. May we forgive, more than seek revenge. May we keep pressing onward and upward in the knowledge and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen!!!
In Christ, Bryan
